About us
The Melbourne Koryu Juku is a small and friendly group of koryu bujutsu practitioners. We have a serious but enjoyable attitude to training. Koryu bujutsu is different from modern martial arts training in both culture and application. While some components of each art are applicable to modern day self-defence, the focus is centred only on correct transmission of each art the way they are instructed in Japan, as have been for centuries. Due to this, there are no alterations of techniques to suit the modern world. Several members travel to Japan annually for training and all members are encouraged to do so.
Members can train in either art, or both, there are no requirements other than those set by our teachers in Japan. Those are as follows.
Tenshin Sho-den Katori Shinto ryu: Members must take a blood oath (keppan 血判) at the Shinbukan dojo before being formally inducted into the school. Training in Melbourne alone is fine, although travel to Japan is eventually expected.
Takenouchi ryu Bitchuden: Before formally 'entering' the school (nyumon 入門), students must have trained for a minimum of one year to show their dedication to the art. Nyumon is ideally taken at either the Chofukan dojo in Kyoto, or the Shinpukan dojo in Tokyo but in some circumstances it can be done here in Melbourne.
